Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage involves applying firm pressure strokes to the skin to release tension in the underlying muscles and connective tissues.  Strokes may be applied following the direction of muscle fibres for a stretching effect, or across the fibres to break down fibrous adhesions and scar tissue which build up due to injury or chronic muscle tension.

As this tension is released physically from the body, a corresponding release in mental/emotional tension may be experienced.  Because stress contributes greatly to the creation of the physical tension stored in the body, by releasing it, the mind is also relieved.

Deep tissue massage can be used for relaxation or it can focus on a specific problem, such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm
