Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a way of re-aligning the bones in your body to relieve pain and increase your mobility by improving the function of your nervous system.

The McTimoney method is a particular form of chiropractic developed by the late John McTimoney and is characterised by the whole body approach and gentle nature of the adjustments. These adjustments are low force and comfortable to receive, so this method is suitable for all ages, including elderly people.

Chiropractic can be effective for a wide range of conditions including:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Hip and knee pain
  • Muscular aches and pains
  • Joint discomfort and stiffness
  • Sports injuries
  • Tension headaches
  • Ante-natal and post-natal back pain

The first appointment lasts 90 minutes to allow the chiropractor time to discuss the reason you have come, obtain a full description of your symptoms, take a comprehensive health history and carry out a physical examination to make sure that chiropractic is suitable for you. Treatment includes adjustments of the bones and joints, mobilisation and muscle release.

The chiropractor may also give you postural, lifestyle and rehabilitation advice to minimise the recurrence of your problem. Once the course of treatment is completed, the chiropractor will discuss maintenance care with you if appropriate.

In order for the chiropractor to feel your bones and joints, you will need to wear light clothing or underwear, or if you prefer, you may wear a gown that will be provided.

You are advised not to do any long drives or strenuous activities such as sport, exercise classes, housework or carrying heavy shopping within 48 hours after a treatment as the adjustments continue to have an effect on the body.
